Emirates SkyCargo Altair 1: First Commercial AI-Enabled Earth Observation Satellite, Made in UAE
There is something fitting about a satellite beginning its journey from Dubai. A city better known for its soaring architecture, ambitious engineering and appetite for the next big thing has become the launchpad for a new chapter in the UAE’s space story.
In a significant milestone for the country’s burgeoning space industry, Emirates SkyCargo has transported Altair-1, the UAE’s first commercial AI-enabled Earth observation satellite, from Dubai to Los Angeles ahead of its scheduled launch in October 2026. The satellite travelled aboard an Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 777 freighter from Dubai World Central, marking another step in the UAE’s ambition to establish itself as a global centre for advanced technology and space innovation.
Altair-1 is the first of 10 satellites that will make up the Altair constellation, developed and manufactured in the UAE by Orbitworks. Rather than simply capturing images from above, the constellation is designed to turn vast quantities of data into useful intelligence. Its sophisticated suite of optical, infrared, thermal and radio-frequency sensors, combined with onboard AI processing, will allow it to monitor everything from environmental change and coastal development to maritime activity, infrastructure and the aftermath of natural disasters.
For travellers accustomed to seeing the UAE from ground level, it offers another perspective on a country whose horizons are increasingly extending beyond the atmosphere.
Getting a satellite safely from one side of the world to another, however, is no ordinary cargo operation. Emirates SkyCargo deployed a dedicated team to oversee Altair-1’s journey, maintaining stringent environmental and safety controls throughout. The carrier has considerable experience in this highly specialised field, having previously transported the Arab Satellite 813 to China and, in 2018, Khalifasat — the first satellite developed and built by UAE engineers — to South Korea.
The movement of Altair-1 also reflects the growing sophistication of the UAE’s aerospace ecosystem. Orbitworks, established in 2024, is the Middle East’s first commercial satellite manufacturer, combining Abu Dhabi-based Marlan Space with San Francisco-based Loft Orbital.
Now, with Altair-1 safely in Los Angeles, attention turns skywards. When it reaches orbit in October, the satellite will begin a mission that promises to make the UAE’s view of the Earth sharper, smarter and considerably more far-reaching.
