AlUla Maps Odysseus Across the Stars in a New Celestial Interpretation of Homer’s Odyssey

What if Odysseus’s legendary voyage could be traced across the night sky? This summer, in the desert of AlUla, Saudi Arabia, Homer’s Odyssey takes on a celestial form, with a newly created asterism mapping the hero’s ten-year journey home among the stars.
Comprising ten stars, the formation depicts Odysseus aboard his ship following the Trojan War. It is not an official constellation, but an interpretive asterism – a contemporary pattern inspired by the ancient tradition of finding stories and meaning in the heavens.
Its position is deliberately chosen, stretching across Boötes, Hercules and Corona Borealis, with Boötes holding a particular connection to Homer’s account of Odysseus’s journey. Against AlUla’s vast sandstone valleys, the effect is an evocative meeting of mythology, astronomy and landscape.
As night falls, guided stargazing experiences invite visitors to locate the Odysseus formation for themselves, while learning about the constellations, ancient celestial navigation and the stories that have travelled across civilisations for thousands of years.

AlUla is an especially fitting setting. More than 6,000 sq km of the destination is protected as Dark Sky Parks, while its skies rank among the darkest five per cent in the world. Removed from the glow of major cities, the desert offers an unusually clear view of the heavens – and a sense of the night sky as it might once have appeared to those who navigated by it.
The Odysseus asterism is visible across the Northern Hemisphere until September and is best viewed shortly after sunset. For those who find it, Homer’s epic becomes something tangible: a voyage suspended above the desert, its route written in light.
The celestial story will continue to develop with AlUla Manara, the forthcoming astronomy centre designed by Heatherwick Studio. Combining scientific research and education with stargazing and immersive experiences, it is intended to establish AlUla as a global destination for astronomy.
For travellers drawn to the intersection of culture, landscape and discovery, there can be few more memorable ways to experience AlUla than by following an ancient voyage across a very modern interpretation of the stars.
